Recent political processes in Ukraine make analysts search for comparisons. While some express restrained optimism about strengthening democracy in Ukraine, others point out particular defects in democratic procedures.
In spite of the uniqueness of the Ukrainian case, neighboring Central European states have been going through similar political shifts for a while now. Th leaders of these countries tend to call the model being established – illiberal democracy.
On the one hand, the establishment of “illiberal democracies” in Hungary and Poland demonstrates high popular support for the authorities and ensures a stable economy. On the other hand, the attempts to curtail some constitutional rights and freedoms of citizens, deformation of the information space and concentration of all branches of power in one hands can be observed. The role of parliament in this process is crucial, as the changes require major amendments to legislation and even constitutions. Should Ukraine follow the example of its neighbors, or is it time to think about the way to counter such shift?
